　　Constantin Brancusi is a Romanian-born sculptor who made his career in France. His works are featured by symbolic abstractness and delicate designs of creatures in the nature. Using unique raw material as marble, wood and bronze, he is considered the pioneer of modernism, and reputed as the Patriarch of Modern Sculpture.

　　Yet his greatness did not come easily. It was derived from his determination and audacity to subvert tradition. At the beginning of his career in Paris, he worked in two workshops. But he lt them soon because in his view, "Nothing can grow under big trees." After leaving the workshops, he had more space for his originality for sculpture, and began to develop his revolutionary style. When composing a sculpture, he did more carving, rather than the method popular with his contemporaries, that of modeling in clay or plaster which would be cast in metal. Because of his works’ uniqueness resulted from the raw material he used, in a certain period, his works were not even regarded as works of art but industrial items. Such incidents happened, but Brancusi never thought about changing his arts style.

　　His perseverance paid off in the end. Due to the water-like shapes and pure essence of the things he depicted that were rlected in his works, he soon became popular in France, Romania and the United States. In 1913 Brancu?i&aposs work was displayed at both the Salon des Indépendants and the first exhibition in the U.S. of modern art, the Armory Show.
