由于學(xué)生臨近申請季,國內(nèi)的大學(xué)課程緊張,沒有時間赴美科研,選擇線上指導(dǎo)。美國科研申請老師,特意與哈佛大學(xué)老師溝通,安排正常的科研指導(dǎo)外,還安排1名助教為學(xué)生輔導(dǎo)作業(yè),在科研結(jié)束后,學(xué)生不僅收獲推薦信、科研證書、科研履歷,還順利發(fā)表學(xué)術(shù)論文一篇。

The experience of researching for one month with Harvard University professor is unforgettable. The mentor always offers us help with his patience in the realm of doing research. Firstly, he gave us four papers involving the investment behavior and the financial development. He commanded us to read literatures and learn something new that I never get in touched with before. In the first meeting on line, my mentor told us our final target of this project. In the next meeting, my mentor leaded us to analyze the structure of the article, imparted to us about the information contained in the article.

Through the PowerPoint based on the paper which is created by Love in 2006, teacher let us comprehend what is the Neoclassical theory of investment, Arrow-Debreu framework and Asymmetric information. I do not know well about the economic model before, then mentor just introduce some rudimentary knowledge about the mathematical modelling for our better understanding of getting an obvious conclusion through a model. Then he explained the sources of data and tell us how to obtain the ideal data from different kinds of websites accurately and swiftly. The variables used in the article is novel for me, so teacher gradually explained where these variables came from and why did we use these kinds of ratio but not the absolute value.

In the next meeting, mentor told us the method of using STATA and process data with software. What is more, he told us what was the meaning of different kinds of variables value created by scheduled procedure. STATA finally will create graphs with the aim of enabling us to draw a more intuitive conclusion. Mentor finally analyzed every graph and told the implication to us. When we do our final research and hand in our assignment, teacher guided us to run the process we had created, and leaded us to finish the final draft according to the article written by Love.

Through the study of one month, I gradually become mature about the scientific research. Previously I do not know about how to accomplish a study. Now I Know that an eminent research must go through hardworking. One has to read thousands of articles first, then find data that suits his research direction. At the same time, he should be versed in mathematical modelling for exploring the nature of the research clearly. What is more, he should learn some knowledge of computer programming to deal with the data and finally obtain the satisfied conclusion through his own analyzing. If one masters the abundant knowledge of mathematical, economics and computer, he may make a difference in scientific research.

During this period, there was a selfless teaching assistant who taught us the theory research method. His content was based on the Investment textbook. I am a student whose major is economics, so I am not proficient in the realm of finance. Through his theory classes of investment, I mastered a good deal of financial terms, the fundamental operation of financial development. The class enriched my financial knowledge, I think it will contribute to my further study, so I am grateful to the assistant for broadening my horizons.

During the program, Mr. Liu initiated a research project named Factors affecting the investment of listed companies in China: Evidence from panel VAR. From selecting the topic at the beginning, to reading academic journals on listed companies and panel VAR, collecting the data, writing reviews and making the presentation PPT, Liu was an active participant throughout the process, presenting earnest and inquiring attitude. The data they collected during the process integrated the main financial index and governance structure index of the two databases. By using Stata, they have treated the data with a more methodical and rigorous attitude. In the final presentation, Liu displayed good logical thinking, confidence and oral defense skills, which assured a good result for the speech. His presentation was spoken highly of not only by me, but also all the fellow students.
On top of that, I was more than glad to witness Mr. Liu rapid growth in academic research capability. As I mentioned, he has conducted a presentation on investment of listed Chinese companies using VAR. They eventually generated an academic paper, at the end of which, he clearly listed all the cited articles and journals, which well demonstrated his academic rigor, as well as satisfying literature-reading capability. Through reading his paper, I believe that his findings contributed to the financial constraints and investments decisions by separating fundamental factors and financial factors that influence the investment. Specifically, impulse-response functions allowed people to obtain more obvious evidence of the importance of financial factors. Therefore, I believe that his paper could be applied to further exploration on the factors that influence the investment decisions made by enterprises. Also, such achievements have well satisfied my expectations for an undergraduate student, and I believe Mr. Liu could keep forging forward to greater progress.
