Anger over Washington&aposs extensive eavesdropping on world leaders and ordinary citizens has shown no signs of abating, as observers say using anti-terrorism as an excuse for pervasive surveillance is "hypocritical and abused".

這里的eavesdrop指to listen secretly what other people are saying(偷聽別人說話,竊聽),常用的搭配就是eavesdrop on somebody;與其意思相近的表達還有l(wèi)isten in,如:Someone was listening in on our conversation.(有人在偷聽我們談話)

Intercept指to stop and take someone or something that is going from on place to another place bore that person or thing gets there,即“攔截,截取”,如:Detectives have been intercepting her mail.(偵查人員一直在攔截她的郵件)

US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper attends a House Intelligence Committee hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington on Tuesday.

The FBI wiretapped his phone.(聯(lián)邦調(diào)查局竊聽了他的電話)口語中還常用bug一詞來表示“竊聽”,如:The police bugged his apartment.(警察對他家實施竊聽)。
