What is the best advice you ever received?

My father would write notes and letters to me and often end with the phrase "Ad astra, peraspera," which translates as: "To the stars, through difficulty." That&aposs the startup narrative ina nutshell.
我父親會記筆記,給我寫信,在信末附上“Ad astra, per aspera”這樣的拉丁文箴言,意思是:“穿過苦難才能看見星空”。這是對創(chuàng)業(yè)企業(yè)的概括。
What would you say to a group of young people looking to enter the tough job market?

Figure out what you love to do, and find a way to get paid doing it. Even though it&aposs tough,take chances, and don&apost get caught up in chasing other people&aposs dreams or going after thelatest shiny penny.

What was the most important thing you learned in school?

Despite not getting good grades, what I did learn was how to think and reason throughhard problems, and I learned the importance of people. I met some amazing people that Iworked with on several startups, including my first startup, Trio Development, a softwarecompany that Apple (AAPL) acquired.

What has been your biggest failure?

I&aposve failed and learned from lots of things. The biggest commercial failure I&aposve been involvedwith was Apple&aposs Newton, which was pushing the bounds of many technologies, and one thatdid not work very well which was handwriting recognition.
我失敗過,從很多事情中學(xué)習(xí)。我親身經(jīng)歷過的最大一次商業(yè)失敗是蘋果公司的Newton,它突破了很多科技的邊緣,但手寫識別不佳。
Yet I had the good fortune to learn from amazing people during that failure. They include:Steve Capps, who co-developed the original Macintosh Finder and taught me about userinterface design; Jony Ive, who today leads Apple&aposs design team and taught me what makes forgreat industrial design; and Michael Tchao, who runs Apple&aposs iPad product marketing and taughtme creative and strategic marketing.

What is one characteristic that every leader should possess?

Every great leader has different characteristics that lead to their success. Jf Bezos isdifferent from Steve Jobs, who is different from John Chambers, who is different from BillGates.

What makes them similar, though, is that each of them figured out a way to attract andengage other great people. I believe one of their keys to success comes from communicating acompelling vision and giving people the confidence to follow them on the path to what mayseem quite crazy at first, yet in hindsight shows true genius.
